The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey 2012

Great imagination, good sense of humour, beautiful soundtrack...

The plot is formed around the themes: quest, property, community and the use of power. Bilbo starts a journey with the dwarves to retrieve their treasure from Smaug the dragon. Goblins, Wargs, Elves and Gollum join his journey. He is reluctant at first but then he develops psychologically and spiritually during the journey. He becomes willing to get Thorin's treasure back from Smaug. The value of property and community plays a significant role in Bilbo's quest.

 

 

The entire journey is shot beautifully and the costumes are well-chosen. From the director to the assistants who have chosen the costumes, everyone has made a great job. Bravo!
 

Obviously, J. R. R. Tolkien who is a scholar of ancient languages and literatures wrote a beautiful novel. I can't tell how ingenious he is after the movie. The book itself must be marvelous.
 

I'm looking forward to seeing the second movie of the trilogy.

 

Muhteşem hayal gücü, iyi bir espri anlayışı, güzel film müzikleri...

Tüm senaryo macera, mülkiyet, halk olma ve güç konuları etrafında oluşturulmuş. Ana karakter Bilbo, Smaug adlı ejderhadan hazineyi geri almak için cücelerle yolcuğa çıkar. Bu yolculuğa Goblinler, Warglar, Elfler ve Gollum da katılır. Bilbo ilk zamanlarda isteksizdir ama yolculuk süresince psikolojik olarak gelişir ve cücelerin kralı Thorin'in hazinesini Samug'dan almak için istekli hareket etmeye başlar. Mülkiyetin ve vatan sahibi olmanın değeri Bilbo'nun macerasında ve karakterinin gelişmesinde önemli bir rol oynar.

 

Yolculuk çok iyi çekilmiş ve kostümler çok iyi seçilmiş. Dolayısı ile yönetmeninden kıyafet seçen asistanlarına kadar filmin tüm kadrosu güzel iş çıkarmış. Bravo!
 

Açıkça görülüyor ki, eski diller ve edebiyat üzerine çalışmış bir bilim adamı olan J. R. R. Tolkien güzel bir roman yazmış. Ne kadar yaratıcı olduğunu bu filmden sonra ifade etmekte güçlük çekiyorum. Kitabın kendisi muhteşem olmalı.

 

Üçlemenin ikinci filmini sabırsızlıkla bekliyorum.

Misconception of movie trailer...

 

I might have misinterpreted the trailer because I had thought that the scenario was modern and interesting enough for adults to watch and enjoy the movie. It was nice to watch a different version of the fairy tale "Snow White and Seven Dwarves" but boring from time to time. Anyway it must be joyous to watch it for children and teenagers, but not for adults.

 

I must confess that it is a brilliant idea to make the dwarfs taller with the help of the accordion legs.

 

Bir fragman yanılgısı...

 

Ben fragmanı yanlış yorumlamış olabilirim ama sanki film ilk gösterime girerken de sinema programlarında çocuk filmi olduğundan çok fazla bahsedilmemişti. Senaryonun yetişkinlerin de izleyebileceği kadar modern ve ilginç olduğunu düşünmüşüm. Zaman zaman sıkıcı olsa da, "Pamuk Prenses ve Yedi Cüceler" masalının farklı bir şeklini izlemek hoştu. Her neyse, ergenler ve çocuklar için izlemesi çok keyifli olmalı.

 

İtiraf etmeliyim ki; cüceleri akordeon bacaklarla uzatmak zekice bir fikir.

The Hunger Games - 2012

My heart hurt while watching how the rich were having fun of the teenagers' pain in the ridiculous game. I haven't read the book, but I believe that the movie and the book should be evaluated separately, anyway. Some pieces of the movie aren't connected and some are missing. Also, it isn't very clear why they start the hunger games and why the districts don't protest it. It sounds like the director and the producers only wanted to show the action part of the movie not the psychological and sociological part. As a natural result of it, it seems like a teenager movie. Still, the subject itself upsets.

Panem'in oniki bölgesinden 12-18 yaşlarında bir erkek ve kız rastgele seçilir, televizyon programı şeklinde sunularak ölümüne yarışırlar ve bu yarışın adı açlık oyunlarıdır. Katniss Everdeen açlık oyunlarında kız kardeşinin yerini gönüllü olarak alır. (www.imdb.com)

 

 Ergenlerin bu saçma oyunda çektikleri acıları zenginlerin muhteşem bir zevkle izlemelerini görmek iç acıtıcı. Filmin uyarlandığı kitabı okumadım ama zaten kitabın ve filmin ayrı ayrı değerlendirilmesinden yanayım. Çünkü ikisinin ifade şekilleri apayrı. Filmde bazı parçalar tam birbirine bağlanmamış ve açlık oyunlarının neden başladığı ve neden bölgelerin bu saçma oyuna başkaldırmadıkları net değil. Sanki filmin yönetmeni ve yapımcıları filmin psikolojik ve sosyolojik altyapısını çok önemsemeyip sadece aksiyon kısmını göstermek istemişler. Tabi böyle olunca, film biraz ergen filmi gibi kalmış. Yine de filmin konusunun üzücü olduğunu itiraf etmek zorundayım.

Çanakkale Çocukları

Savaş hakkında bir film ama ummuduğun bakış açısı ile değil...

Çanakkale savaşının en acımasız sahnelerinin çok az figüranla ve az bir görselle çekildiğini düşünerek sinema salonuna girmiştim ama benim düşündüğümden çok daha sürreal bir bakışı vardı filmin. Çanakkale savaşının bir kahramanlık öyküsü olmasından çok, savaşta çocuklarını kaybetmek istemeyen bir annenin rüyalarından etkilenmesini ve savaş alanından onları kurtarmasını anlatıyor. Tabi bir bulutun mucizesi ile oluyor bu. En çok sevdiğim replik, komutanın cephede Kasım beye söylediği "Siz savaş çıkarırsınız, biz savaşırız ve biz ölürüz!" idi. Ne kadar da haklı! Bir de duyduğum İngilizce ninni anne olmanın ve çocuk olmanın ne kadar evrensel olduğunu hatırlattı bana. Uzun bir süre içimden bu ninniyi tekrarladım.

Büyük çalışmalar yapılmış bir film ama yine de izlerken "Bir şeyi eksik!" dedirtiyor insana.

 

Kostümler ve mekanlar üzerine iyi çalışılmış, belli ki bir hayli de para harcanmış ama efektler sahnelere seyirciyi tamamen içine alacak ve tam odaklanmış şekilde filmi seyretmesini sağlayacak kadar etkili bir şekilde oturmamış. Bu kadar oyuncuya ve figürana ihtiyaç duyulan filmler çok az yapıldı Türkiye'de. Dolayısıyle, Lord of the Rings veya Harry Potter filmleri gibi güçlü efektler ve film müzikleri yok Fetih 1453'te. Diğer yandan filmin seslendirmesi de filme tam odaklanmanızı engelliyor. Sanki film başka bir dilde çekilmiş de Türkçe seslendirme yapılmış gibi hissediyorsunuz. Oyunculuklardaki öfke gösterilerinde de bir yapmacıklık var, belki bu oyunları yüzünden ile ya da öfke hareketleri efektlerle ya da film müzikleriyle yeterince desteklenmediği içindir. Dikkatimi çeken başka bir nokta ise oyuncular arasında İffet dizisindeki başrol oyuncularından İbrahim Çelikkol' dan başka simaları bilinen başka bir oyuncu olmaması. Belki bu durum yönetmen Faruk Aksoy'un özellikle çok populer oyuncularla iş yapmak istememesinden, ya da çok bilinen oyuncularla çalışıp onlara büyük para vermektense onlar için ayıracağı parayı film için harcamayı istemesinden kaynaklanabilir. Son olarak, senaryoda neden 15. yüzyıldaki Osmanlı Devleti insanları için Romalılar ve diğerleri "Türkler" diye bahsediyor? Belki de bir kere bile "Osmanlı" kelimesini duymadım. 20. yüzyılın başlarındaki Vahidettin dönemi ile ilgili oyunlarda veya filmlerde "Türkler" yanılgısına düşülebilir ama 15. yy'a ait Osmanlı Devleti'ni anlatan bir filmdeki bu yanılgıyı anlamadım. Yine de başarılı bir film olduğunu söylemeliyim.

 

 

It is obvious that they worked very hard for the movie but you can't stop yourself from saying "There's something missing!" while watching it.

 

Costumes and locations were chosen very carefully and it is clear that too much money were spent. However, the special effects aren't good enough to keep the audience completely focused on the movie. There are very few movies having a lot of actors and people having a walking on part. Maybe we could say that we're inexperienced. Therefore, there aren't strong special effects and impressive soundtrack in Fetih 1453 as there are in movies like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Also you feel like watching a foreign movie dubbed into Turkish, which is weird for an original Turkish movie. There is an artificial manner in acting "anger", too. Maybe it is because anger acting isn't strengthened enough by soundtrack and special effects. Another thing taking my attention is the cast. When I first heard that a movie about the conquest was going to be shoot I had thought it would be a star-studded movie. But there is no celebrity other than Ibrahim Celikkol who plays in a TV series called Iffet. Maybe it is because the director Faruk Aksoy didn't want to work with celebrities on purpose not to let the movie be a star-studded one. Or he wanted to keep the money he would pay the celebrities and instead spend it for other expenses of the movie. Finally, why do the Romans and the others talk about the Ottomans in 15th century as "Turks"  I might not  have heard the word "Ottoman" even once throughout the movie. I could understand the a possible misconception of "Turks" in plays of movies for Vahidettin's era in 20th century but not a movie about Ottoman Empire in 15th century. Still I must confess that the movie is a blockbuster.

Katre-i Matem - by Iskender Pala

You can't keep your cruosity till the next chapter!

It is a beautifully-written novel in both language wise and character wise. The language isn't simple but fluent, which is my favorite, and all the characters are given shape in a magnificent way with the whole reasons why they are that particular characters. therefore while reading it, you understand how Topac Yeye, Kara Sahin, Hafız Celebi, Bican Efendi, Ibrahim Pasa and III. Ahmet feel inside and why they do so. It is also very piquant the fact that the novel is written from a manuscript purchased from an auction by Iskender Pala although it could be a part of his fiction. It explains the paradox between the people luxuriating in opulence in the palace and the poor ordinary public in the Era of Tulip very well. So that, I wouldn't be surprised if a movie was shot based on the novel a few years later. I also think that it is a gift for us to read novels from someone like Iskender Pala who has a great command of Divan Literature.

Merakınızı bir sonraki bölümü okuyana kadar yenemiyorsunuz!

Hem dili hem de karakterleri açısından güzel yazılmış bir roman bu. Dili kolay değil ama akıcı, ki bu benim sen sevdiğim yazım şeklidir,  ve bütün karakter neden öyle olduklarını gösteren tüm sebepleriyle şekillenmişler. Bu yüzden, kitabı okurken, Topaç Yeye'nin, Kara Şahin'in, Hafız Çelebi'nin, Bican Efendi'nin, Sadrazam İbrahim Paşa'nın ve III. Ahmet'in nasıl hissettiklerini ve neden öyle hissettiklerini çok iyi anlıyorsunuz. Ayrıca İskender Pala'nın bir müzayededen aldığı eski bir el yazmasını hikâyeleştirdiğini bilmek de çok ilginç, her ne kadar bunun yazarın kurgusunun bir parçası olma ihtimali olsa da. Kitap, lale devrinde zevk-ü sefa içinde yaşayan saraylılar ile fakir halk arasındaki paradoks çok iyi ifade edilmiş. Bu yüzden eğer bir kaç yıl sonra Katre-i Matem'in filmi çekilirse şaşırmam. Ayrıca Divan Edebiyatı'na bu kadar hakim bir kişiden, İskender Pala'dan kitaplar okumak bence bizim için bir lütuftur.

Little Children

 

The scenario isn't as you expect!

Kate Winslet's (Sarah Pierce) and Jackie Earle Haley's (Ronnie J. McGorvey) acting are superb. Sarah is the perfect type to act out the bored and intellectual house-wife stuck with caring a child and Ronnie is to act out a pervert who is to be evaded from. Because of the title of the movie and the character called Ronnie, you expect something  really bad is going to happen to a child throughout the movie, but it isn't the case. Although Ronnie is a pervert, he is still a mother's child. Labeling people must be one of the most terrible mistakes that a human being can do. He could be a pervert in the past, but he could be given a chance to be a good boy as his mother writes to him in the hospital just before she dies. What Ronnie has been through in the movie reminds the character Dave Boyle who is raped when he is a child and his execution in the movie Mystic River. It is a cliché that the unfaithful spouses, Brad and Sarah change their minds from running away together so as to go back their safe homes after experiencing scary minutes. What is shocking is the way Ronnie choose to be a good boy: castrating himself with a knife. Well, Todd Field (the screenplay writer and the director) and Tom Perrotta who is the author the novel the movie based on have written a good screenplay. Normally I don't like the narrator in a movie. However, it must be the only way to tell the story of the novel as completely as possible through the narrator since it may not be possible to transfer all the descriptive parts of it which are essential to tell the connection between the events and the characters. Now, I wonder the novel itself.

Senaryo umduğunuz gibi gelişmiyor!

Kate Winslet, Sarah rolü ile entelektüel (İngiliz Edebiyatı üzerine doktora çalışmaları yapıyor) olmak ve orta yaş -ev hanımı- anne olmak arasında bocalayan kadını çok iyi canlandırmış. Jackie Earle Haley ise Ronnie adındaki sapık karakterini hem fiziksel hem de psikolojik anlamda çok iyi yansıtmış. Belki karakterini fiziksel anlamda da yansıttığını söylemem insanlara dış görünüşlerine göre ön yargı ile yaklaşma hatasını körüklüyor ama ben filmde öyle hissettim. Filmin adından (Küçük Çocuklar) dolayı ve Ronnie karakterinden dolayı hep Sarah ve Brad'in çocuklarının başına hep kötü bir şey gelecekmiş gibi diken üstünde izliyorsunuz filmi ama öyle olmuyor. Ronnie'nin annesi, her ne kadar Ronnie bir sapık da olsa o da hala bir annenin çocuğu ve biriciği olduğunu ve insanları etiketlemenin insanoğlunun en büyük hatalarından biri olduğunu hatırlatıyor. Ronnie bir sapık olabilir, ama her insan gibi iyi bir insan olma şansının verilmesini hak ediyor. Tıpkı annesinin hastanede ölmeden az evvel bıraktığı not gibi: Lütfen iyi bir çocuk ol! Ronnie'ye yapılanlar bana Gizemli Nehir (Mystic River) filminde çocukken tecavüze uğrayan Dave Boyle'nin infazını hatırlattı. Filmin sonunda sadakatsiz eşlerin yaşadığı bir klişe gerçekleşiyor: Brad ve Sarah birlikte kaçmaya karar vermişken, kaçmalarına ramak kala başlarına gelen tuhaf ve korkutucu olaylar yüzünden en güvenli yerleri olan evlerine geri dönüyorlar. Şaşırtıcı olan ise Ronnie'nin annesinin vasiyetini gerçekleştirmek için bulduğu çare: kendini bir bıçakla hadım etmek. Bence filmin yönetmeni Todd Field, Tom Perrotta'nın yazdığı romandan uyarladığı film için yazar ile beraber güzel bir senaryo yazmışlar. Normalde, filmlerde anlatıcının dış sesini sevmiyorum ama bu filmin bir romandan uyarlandığını düşününce belki de anlatıcı kullanmak, romanın içindeki karakterler ve olaylar arasındaki bağı anlatan betimleyici paragrafları en iyi şekilde ifade etmenin en mümkün yoludur. Şu anda romanın kendisini merak ediyorum ben.

What a pure and piquant language!

It is the first book which I read by Fakir Baykurt. It was such a great book that I want to read more by him. There are quite short sentences, but the author reflects his ability in observing people in the writing so beautifully that you are satisfied with reading good quality of literary language. It was first published in 1958 and it tells a story about a village called Karatas and its people: Bayram, his wife, Hacca, his mother Irazca, Haceli and his wife Fatma and the village headman, Cımbıldak Husnu. The village headman sells Haceli a piece of land which is located in front of Bayram's house and Bayram and his family aren't happy about it and do whatever they can to stop Haceli from building a house there. The novel focuses on the differences between the rich and the poor. You desperately see how weak the poor is and how powerful the rich is. As for the revenge of the snakes, it comes from the fact that Kara Sali who is Bayram's father kills the head of the snakes years ago and the snakes seek revenge for their loss in the whole family. I thought that the snakes would take revenge from the people who hurt Bayram and his family, but it isn't the case.

Ne kadar saf ve etkileyici bir dil!

Fakir Baykurt'tan okuduğum ilk kitap bu. Filmini izlediğimi hayal meyal hatırlıyorum ama mutlaka izlemeliyim yeniden. Kitabı okurken o kadar mutlu oldum ki yazarın daha çok kitabını okumak istiyorum. Kitap yoğun olarak kısa cümlelerle yazılmış, fakat yazar gözlem yeteneğini o kadar güzel yansıtmış ki cümlelerine, cümlelerin kısalığına aldırmaksızın edebi bir parça okuduğunuzu hissediyorsunuz ve tatmin oluyorsunuz. İlk olarak 1958'de basılmış ve 1950lerde Karataş köyünde geçen bir hikâyeyi anlatıyor. Ana karakterler Bayram, eşi Haçça ve annesi Irazca, Haceli, eşi Fatma ve köyün muhtarı Cımbıldak Hüsnü. Muhtar, köyün dışında oturan Haceli'ye köy içinden Bayram'ın evinin önünden toprak satar ev yapması için. Fakat Bayram ve ailesi bu durumdan memnun değildir; çünkü Haceli'nin evinin ardına düşecektir evleri ve bu durumda Haceli'nin tuvaleti ve gübre atma alanı Bayram'ın evinin önü olacaktır. Bayram ve ailesi de evin yapılmasını engellemek için ellerinden geleni yaparlar. Hikâyenin akışı süresince kitap özellikle varsılla yoksulun farkları üzerinde durmaktadır ve siz de okurken ümitsiz bir şekilde yoksulun ne kadar zayıf ve varsılın ne kadar güçlü olduğunu görüyorsunuz. Yılanlara gelince, Bayram'ın babası Kara Şali yıllar önce yılanların başı şahmeranı öldürmüştür ve yılanlar da tüm aileden öç alma peşindedir. Bense gayet saf bir şekilde bu yılanların Bayram'a ve ailesine zarar verenlerden öç alacaklarını beklemiştim ama öyle olmadı.

Okurken en çok etkilendiğim kısma yer vermeden edemeyeceğim. Bayram, askerdeyken gördüğü duşu karısı Haçça'ya anlatmaya çalışırken:

Haçça sordu: "Sular hiç bitmiyor mu?"

"Biter mi gıı? Askeriyenin suyu!"

"Kim ısıtıyor peki?"

"Sular ısınık ulan!"

"İyi ya kim ısıtıyor?"

"Yukardan dökülüyor!"

"Kim döküyor?"

"Allah Allah!... Damda kazan mı var da kendi dökülüyor?"

"Damda değil! Acıpayamlı derdi ki , ' Aşağıda, ta bodrumda kazan var. Kocaman bir kazan. Tanker kazanı gibi. Gazyağı, benzin, mazot taşıyan tankerler vardır. Sular bodrum katta bu kazanın içinde kaynıyor!' Acıpayamlı böyle derdi..."

"Aşağıda kaynıyor da dama nasıl çıkıyor?"

"Çıkar! Askeriyenin suyu dedin mi çıkar! Kuvvetli su! Basınçlı! Fışkırıyor! Bahçe suluyorlar. Şimdi burası bahçe değil mi? Gök gövertiyi, hem de çiçekleri sulamak için kürek lazım değil. Eline lastik bir boru alıyorsun, ucunu suyun ağzına taktın mı hava ya tuttun mu, selvi boylu fışkırıyor. Yukarıdan yağmur gibi yeşil yeşil dökülüyor!..."

Haçça baktı baktı, dudaklarını devirdi.

"Git adam!..."

"Ne 'git'i gıı?..

It opens doors to the other crucial authors, poets and their books.

I bought the book from D&R without having a look inside it in a great excitement and when I went home I was disappointed because I don't like reading essays. However, I had bought it and had to read it. I didn't like all of the essays but I was delighted to read the ones about authors and intellectual people. She writes about some authors and poets who I haven't heard of or I haven't read a book by yet like Manuel Puig, Furruğ Ferruhzad, Thomas Mann, Emile Zola, Borges, Stephen Greenbalt, Samuel Beckett, Sylvia Plath and so on. Right now, To be Shakespeare by Stephen Greenbalt, Germinal by Emile Zola and the article J'Accuse by Emile Zola are in my LIST TO READ.

Şemspare'yi D&R raflarına konur konmaz, hiç içine bakmadan büyük heyecanla almıştım ama eve gidince hayal kırıklığına uğradım, çünkü ben deneme okumayı sevmiyorum. Kitabı almıştım ve okumalıydım. Yazdığı tüm denemeleri beğenmedim ama yazarlar ve entellektüeller hakkında olanları zevkle okudum. Denemelerde benim henüz adını duymadığım ya da duyduğum fakat hiç kitabını okumadığım yazarlar ve şairler vardı. Mauel Puig, Furruğ Ferruhzad, Thomas Mann, Emile Zola, Borges, Stephen Greenbalt, Samul Beckett, Sylvia Plath ve daha pek çoğu gibi. Stephen Greenbalt'ın Shakespeare Olmak ve Emile Zola'nın Germinal adlı kitaplarını ve yine Emile Zola'nın Suçluyorum adlı makalesini okuma listeme koydum bile.  

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

What a marvelous name for the movie!

To be honest, I haven't had that much fun before when people kill people in a movie. And I think the name of the movie could be nothing  but "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang". Robert Downey Jr. and Vil Kilmer's acting were superb. Normally I don't enjoy narrating in a movie, but Robert Downey Jr. was cute as a narrator. Finally, It could be one of the best action movies that I've ever seen.

Film için ne muhteşem bir isim! 

Dürüst olmak gerekirse, bir filmde insanlar birbirini öldürdüğünde daha önce bu kadar eğlenmemiştim. Ve sanırım filmin adı da "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" den başka bir şey de olamazdı. Robert Downey Jr. ve Vil Kilmer'ın oyunculukları çok iyiydi. Ben normalde filmde anlatıcı figüründen pek hoşlanmam ama Robert Downey Jr. anlatıcı olarak çok şirindi. Sonuç olarak, bu film izlediğim en iyi aksiyon filmlerinden biri olabilir. 



The Snow - Kar - by Orhan Pamuk

It is a book about Kars - a city in East Anatolian Region - , its people, their way of living, the political and religious opinions in the city and the "sad" poet Ka.

Firstly, I have to confess that I admire Orhan Pamuk's word power and his talent to describe how people feel inside. I don't get bored while I am reading the long descriptions, which is a success for an author. I feel like the characters are talking. I think Pamuk has got excellent observation skills.

Chapter 31 summarizes what the whole book tries to tell to the reader. All the crucial characters except Ka is in there and talk about the content of a column which will be written in a newspaper in Germany. In the meeting, what Fazil says gets my attention: "We're not stupid, we're only poor." And he adds he doesn't want to be like a European.

Regarding Fazil's utterances, I consider that to be civilized isn't supposed to mean that you should be like a European. You can have all the pieces of your own culture and be civilized at the same time since to be civilized is universal. It doesn't have a single description.

After I finished the book, I felt sure that the artists are sad people who feel everything deeply. Their emotions are utterly intensive, otherwise they cannot write books, create marvelous paintings, write songs, sing songs, compose and write poems like the sad poet Ka. Then I remembered what Göksel (female singer) said when she got her Golden Butterfly Award organized by Hürriyet Kelebek: " You get upset, suffer, write songs and  you get an award for this. It's weird."

Kar, Kars şehri, Kars’ın insanları, yaşam şekilleri, şehrin politik ve dinle ilgili düşünce yapısı ve mutsuz şair Ka ile ilgili.

Öncelikle Orhan Pamuk’un kelime haznesine ve insanların duygularını anlatma becerisine hayran olduğumu söylemek zorundayım. Uzun betimlemelerini okurken bunalmıyorum, ki bu da yazar için gerçek bir başarı. Sanırım Orhan Pamuk’un muhteşem bir gözlem yapma yeteneği var.

31 numaralı bölüm, tüm kitabın okuyucuya neler anlatmak istediğini özetliyor. Ka dışındaki tüm önemli karakterler burada ve Almanya’da çıkacak olan bir gazeteye gidecek olan yazının içeriği hakkında konuşuyorlar. Toplantıda en çok dikkatimi çeken Fazıl’ın sözleri oldu.”Biz aptal değiliz, sadece fakiriz.” diyordu ve bir Avrupalı gibi olmak istemediğini ekliyordu.

Fazıl’ın sözleri ile ilgili olarak, medeni olmanın Avrupalı olmak manasına gelmediğini düşünüyorum. Kişi kendi kültürünün özelliklerine sahip olabilir ve aynı zamanda medeni de olabilir çünkü medeni olma hali evreseldir, Avrupalılara özel bir durum değil.

Kitabı bitirdikten sonra, sanatçıların her şeyi çok derinden hisseden üzgün insanlar olduğundan emin oldum. Onların duyguları ciddi derece yoğun, aksi takdirde kitap yazamaz, muhteşem tablolar yaratamaz, şarkı yazamaz ve söyleyemez, beste yapamaz ve mutsuz şair Ka gibi şiir yazamazlardı. Ve sonra Göksel’in Hürriyet Kelebek’in düzenlediği Altın Kelebek Ödülünü aldığında söylediklerini hatırladım: “Üzülüyoruz, acı çekiyoruz, şarkı yazıyoruz ve bunun için ödül alıyoruz. Ne garip!”

Happy Endings [2005]

Don't be fooled by the poster! It's not an erotic movie, for sure. Erotic movies don't have any value in this blog.

The movie shows three different lives, there are multiple stories around the characters and these characters meet the other characters from another set of life in some scenes and then they connect somehow.

There are homosexual relationships; Gill and Charley, two lesbian couple. They do not irritate you, which is a nice presentation for the director. There being homosexual people around us, people who can't stand the idea of being homosexual had better watch soft movies like "Happy Endings". The movie makes you respect their relationship before you notice as you do for the heterosexual ones.

And there are parents having problems with their children: Frank is generally upset and worried about his son Otis for being a gay or not and Mamie is feeling remorse for letting her child be adopted when she is teeange mother. However, you don't feel pity for them and start to cry. You just watch it and understand the situation as it is. Very objective.

Morning Glory

Can someone tell Becky to take off her dull suits, please? They're killing me!

It is really amusing to see how a mother can describe her daughter's dreams or creativity in different ages. Becky's mother says "Your dreams were adorable when you were eight, inspiring when you were eighteen but they are embarrassing when you are twenty eight." I thought it was unfair to hear them from one's mother's mouth. However, the character Becky irritates me. It is fine that she has dreams and utterly excited about them, but she doesn't have self-confidence when she wears, talks and walks. She shows us how miserable a person can be.

There being other women who don't wear suits, I think there isn't a dress code in IBS, down there. Then why does she wear those dull suits all the time? The only time she wears something pretty is when she goes to NBS for an interview. She is wearing a beige dress, pink heels, a blue scarf and nice-soft make-up. It is the last scene where she finds herself. I am sure if the movie went on after that scene, we would see her in more colorful and elegant clothes.

However, I have to confess that I admire her determination to save "Daybreak". Well, she succeeds in the end.

Evita

It is a well-made decision to shoot the movie as a musical since it is the most aesthetic way to present someone's life which is filled with noise, violence, anger, masculinity and love. Otherwise, I wouldn't bear the see the scenes of the riots between the public and military forces. The musical way takes out all the possible ugliness of the political issues of the movie.

Eva Peron has relationships with men. In each time, the next one is better than the former one in the sense of power and monetary value. She eventually marries Argentinean president Juan Peron and gets her ultimate power thanks to him. During the movie, the masculinity voice repeats the following " She should not get out of the bed, she mustn't forget she is paid because she is good in the bed.", which is bothering and irritating. They find the right to repeat that again and again just because she doesn't have a wealthy family and a father - meaning power - and a very decent job. Isn't it possible that a woman can be smart? Can't a woman be accepted and admired by the public just because she is smart? Has the success of a female to be connected to sexuality every time? The quote above smells very masculine and isn't fair.

Sex and the City II [2010]

It is all about black&white.

It starts with a gay wedding. It is the first time I have ever seen an aesthetic, beautiful, romantic and black&white - I mean the decoration and the black&white movie at Carrie and John's bedroom - gay wedding. There are swans at the wedding as if ballet dancers would come from somewhere to perform The Swan Lake Ballet. I wouldn't be surprised if it happened.

At the wedding, the couple who don't understand why Carrie and John don't want to have children and get the biased face right away are utterly irritating. There are  a lot of these irritating  people around us. If you are a young woman and over 25, they push you to get married as soon as possible. When you get married, they push you to have children before you are 30. And the pressure continues on different matters according to your age and the phase of your life. In these moments, I want to scream " It is non of your business!" Would they hear me? I don't think so.

Carrie and John celebrate their second wedding anniversary with a delicious dinner and sipping red wine. Carrie's present for him is a watch by Rolex and John's present for her is TV in bedroom, which is a horrible idea. Carrie doesn't like it too because she doesn't want to be one of the couples who lie down and watch television and don't talk. If you are married, are you one of them? I hope you aren't and won't be.

One day, Carrie goes to her own apartment to work in peace. Although they are quite independent spouses with no children, she still needs that kind of privacy. Then John puts forward the idea of taking two days off to do what they want to in peace, which is a bit weird. I don't mean John's idea but do you have privacy in your marriage? Are you bored of each other? The need of privacy is inevitable for every individual. Well, if you say "It's isn't for me!", it must be. It could solve any probable problem which could arise in your marriage and life.

Abu Dhabi part of the movie smells nothing but luxury. These women don't stop wearing high heels even if they are in the middle of the desert.

Sex and the City [2008]

Sex and the City is another movie shot after the serials broadcast on TV between 1998-2004. It is like a longer version of a normal episode, so it could have been broadcast on TV as four or five episodes.

When I think about it as the movie, the soundtrack in the beginning is a disappointment for me. It could be something better than that.

It is about four wonderful friends Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York Goldenblatt and Miranda Hobbes and their differing ideas on friendships and relationships.

In the movie, Mr. Big buys an apartment with very high ceiling - which is my favorite - and builds a huge closet - which is another favorite of mine - After Carrie and his friends attend an auction in which the jewels of a lady jilted after ten years' relationship are sold, Carrie puts forward the
subject of marriage. Then Mr. Big and she decide to marry in the kitchen while he is cooking as if it was a matter of business. Totally no romance! After that, Mr. Big and Carrie get prepared for
the wedding. Well, Carrie gets prepared mostly for the wedding in an old library - what a great
place to get married - In the end Mr. Big can't stand the pressure of marrying in a fabulous and
hyperbolic way of marrying and get out of the car to hold the bride's hand.

Before the probable wedding, Carrie reads a letter by Ludwig Van Beethoven to Mr. Big in bed,   
which I can't go on without including that marvelous letter below:

Good morning, on 7th July.

Isn't it beautiful?

After the no-wedding, Carrie falls in a huge depression, looks at the mirror in the Mexican resort which she arranges for the honeymoon and realizes how devastated she is. However, she isn't alone; she's got three perfect friends who will console her. In there, she asks the dramatic question of a person who is jilted: "Will I ever laugh again?" And she laughs when Charlotte "poughkeepsied" in her pants.

Yes, the movie and the serials are about sexuality, promiscuity and femininity. However, the movie is beyond them: pure friendship of four women. While they are celebrating Samantha's fifth birthday in the end of the movie, don't you think of your own friendships? Well, I do.

Coffee and Cigarettes

Could a black&white movie be colourful? Absolutely yes! 

I had been kind of biased against black&white movies until I watched Coffee and Cigarettes and The Artist. I used to think that it would be a waste of time if I couldn't see any colour in the movie. However, the shapes  and images were extremely vivid in this movie. Especially the chess board like tables in the cafes.

"Coffee and cigarettes" is like "Tea and cigarettes" in our culture. We have "tea" instead of "coffee"; we also have the conversation which goes with it, though. Cousins, brothers and sisters, friends and old friend chat around a chess board like table sipping their coffee (In some vignettes, it is tea) and smoking. This conversation scene seems like universal.

Each vignette includes a different piece of human feelings and situations: arrogance, weakness, friendship, pity, anger, silliness, nonsenses, scepticism, brotherhood, and so on.

Notes on a Scandal

Adultery is definitely something delicate to talk about and think about. One may have sufficient reasons to be faithless and the other may have other reasons to be faithful. The thing is that the spouses had better be mature enough to listen to each other.

To me, women aren’t supposed to get married to men who are much older than them. And those men are supposed to acknowledge their wife could seek something more in life.  It could seem OK in the beginning, but ten years later it may not be the case.

While watching the movie, you feel like something terrible is going to happen. I think this feeling comes from the fact that you are a heterosexual. It is sort of irritating to follow what Barbara writes about Sheba in her diary day by day.
